• Friday will mark the first time the two programs have ever met in their history. Davidson coach Bob McKilllop is in his 33rd season as the head coach of the Wildcats, while Tom Izzo is in his 27th season as the head coach of the Spartans.

• In the 34 NCAA Tournaments in school history, Michigan State has a 26-8 record in its opening game of the event. Last year, the Spartans lost their opening game of the event in a play-in game to UCLA.

• Spartans point guard Tyson Walker is expected to play against Davidson after leaving the Spartans’ Big Ten tournament semifinal loss to Purdue due to a sprained ankle.

• Davidson starting point guard Foster Loyer spent three seasons at Michigan State before transferring to Davidson prior to the 2021-22 season. He earned second-team All-Atlantic 10 honors and enters the game averaging a team-best 16.4 points per game while shooting 44.5 percent from 3-point range and a NCAA-best 93.4 percent from the 3-point line.

• The winner of Friday’s game will play the winner of No. 2 seed Duke against No. 15 seed Cal-State Fullerton in a Sunday second-round game.
